Is Type Clean really free?
Yes — sign in with Google (free, just to track your plan) and get 100 free generations per day on Type Clean's free hosted models (Llama 3.2, Granite 4.0), resetting daily at no cost. Bringing your own API key (OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, OpenRouter, or any OpenAI-compatible provider) requires a one-time $19.99 BYOK license, and Premium (hosted GPT-4.1 mini, Claude Haiku, Gemini Flash without managing keys, plus unlimited free-model use) requires a subscription.
What does "local-first" mean?
All your data — settings, prompts, personas, and API keys — is stored in Chrome's local storage on your device. Type Clean has no servers, no account system, and no analytics. Generation requests go straight from your browser to the model provider you choose.
What is a persona?
A persona is your saved voice: tone rules, do/don't guidance, and up to three writing samples. When active, every rewrite is guided by it so results sound like you instead of a generic AI.
Which sites does it work on?
Type Clean works in standard text fields, contenteditable editors, and same-origin iframes across the web — email, CMSs, forums, social sites. Google Docs' canvas editor is not supported in v1, and we say so up front rather than half-working.
Do you see my API keys or my text?
No. Keys are stored only on your device and are never included in backups or sync. Your text goes directly to the provider you selected for BYOK, or through Type Clean's server if you use a free or Premium cloud model.
Does it work in other browsers?
Type Clean is Chrome-only in v1 (Manifest V3). Chromium-based browsers may work but aren't officially tested.
